Meet Matt Emkey

Matthew K. Emkey (b. 1981)

Matt’s musical career spans numerous genres and styles, with over 500 shows as the keyboardist for 20 different rock bands. As a classically trained pianist and organist, he has concertized throughout the Northeastern United States, presenting organ recitals in numerous churches, concert halls, and universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Boston, and Wesleyan. Matt was awarded a four-year Presidential Scholarship for Distinguished Achievement to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. There, he studied Organ Performance and Music Theory with world-renowned Composer-in-Residence Dr. Dan Locklair, winning the Patricia Sloan Mize Award for outstanding instrumental performance while still a freshman. Most recently, Matt completed a degree in Leadership & Organizational Studies summa cum laude from USM and has begun a Master of Business Administration degree.

In December 2010, Matt was named full-time Organist to the Cathedral Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in the Diocese of Palm Beach, FL, and subsequently appointed as the Director of Music Ministries. He served on the Diocesan Liturgical Commission, overseeing music programs for over 250,000 Catholics in the 52 parishes of the Diocese of Palm Beach. He has been an active member of the American Guild of Organists since 1997, serving as Dean and Sub-Dean for both the Palm Beach and Portland (Maine) Chapters.

Since Matt relocated to Maine in 2018, he has had the pleasure of performing as an organist and pianist in beautiful, sacred spaces with many of Maine’s extraordinarily talented musicians. He has served as a Cathedral Organist at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and worked for both the Diocese of Portland and Williston-Immanuel United Church, where he served as Director of Music & Organist from 2019 to 2025. Matt is thrilled to now serve as the Minister of Music here at Falmouth Congregational Church! He also works full-time at a law firm in downtown Portland and currently resides in Falmouth.
